I purchased my first 35mm SLR camera in 1969, and soon found that birds and natural scenery were the subjects that intrigued me the most. I switched to Canon DSLRs in 2003 and haven't looked back.

A great deal of my photography is done on North Carolina's Outer Banks and along the inland coast where bird life abounds. Fall and Winter have been my primary seasons, mainly because of the extensive migratory flocks that make the North Carolina coast such a wonderful place for bird photography. When I finally added a kayak to my list of equipment, I found that I could get into areas I had previously been unable to reach using my duck boat and trolling motor. The kayak now provides access to other great locations for my photography during Spring and Summer when the excessive crowds, heat and insects along the coast are so problematic. It also gives me places to go closer to home, making day trips a worthwhile option on weekends.

My penchant for making many of my own photographic accessories is reflected among these pages. These projects keep me occupied when the weather is not conducive to good images. I share those do-it-yourself projects here in the "Equipment Notes" section. My kayaking adventures are documented primarily on my blog called "The Casual Kayaker".
